Here's a comprehensive guide to keep them healthy and blooming beautifully:
Spring (March-May)
- Remove any dead or damaged branches after flowering finishes
- Deadhead spent blooms to encourage energy into growth rather than seed production
- Apply a balanced fertilizer around the base of the tree
- Add a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds
- Check for signs of pests or disease and treat if necessary
Summer (June-August)
- Water deeply during dry spells, especially for young trees
- Monitor for powdery mildew and treat with appropriate fungicide if needed
- Remove any suckers growing from the base to maintain tree shape
- Keep the area around the base weed-free
Autumn (September-November)
- Reduce watering as temperatures cool
- Clear fallen leaves from around the base to prevent disease
- Apply a layer of well-rotted compost or manure around the root zone
- Check tree stakes and ties on young trees, loosening if needed
Winter (December-February)
- Prune to shape the tree and remove crossing branches (best done when dormant)
- Remove up to one-third of the oldest stems on mature trees to encourage new growth
- Protect young trees from harsh winds with temporary screening if needed
- Avoid heavy pruning as this can reduce next year's blooms
General Year-Round Tips
- Lilacs bloom on old wood, so avoid heavy pruning
- Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues
- Plant in well-drained soil with full sun for best blooming
- Be patient with young trees as they can take 3-4 years to flower well
This checklist will help ensure your Lilac trees remain healthy and produce those gorgeous fragrant blooms year after year!
